INCOMPRESO

Do you have any really truly favorite movie? I mean, the one not only you enjoy but more like the one that stabbed deep into your heart, so much that from time to time you can’t help but looking back at the day you first watch it, wondering if it played a significant role in shaping you into what you are now?

I do. I have two actually. Unfortunately one was made in 1978 and one in 1984, and I find it hard to find a good copy of the movies, much as I’ve tried. The first one is Questo sì che è amore aka The Last Touch Of Love aka The Day Santa Claus Cried aka The Last Night Of Christmas, starring Sven Valsecchi, Christopher George, and Gay Hamilton. It tells the story of Tommy, a boy who lived all his life in a hospital sterile room do to his agammaglobulinemia, a disorder in which a person has very low levels of protective immune system proteins called immunoglobulins. To make matters worse, his parents were getting a divorce, and little Tommy never understood why his father never visited him anymore. He then sent a tape of his own simple singing to the TV show hosted by his father, as shown in the following video:

The simple song really hit his father’s conscience like a ton of wet bricks. I kinda hope that sending the song would make things better for the whole family, but unfortunately the story didn’t go that way.

The other one is the 1984 Misunderstood, starring Gene Hackman and Henry Thomas. I think the tagline of the movie explains it perfectly: “For every kid who wants to be hugged. For every parent who tries to love and understand.” It tells the story of Andrew, a young boy who struggles with family, friends, and relationships.

Why do I love those two that much? It’s a simple and selfish reason, actually. You see, at one point of my life I was Tommy, and I was Andrew. The only difference is that I’m still around and they’re not.

I really hope none of you were any of those two boys…

And I pray sincerely that none of you will ever be any of their parents…

Sepertinya ada orang yang di dekat sy tinggal mirip kayak gitu. Nggak separah tommy sih penyakitnya, tapi ditinggal ayahnya gegara dia sakit gitu. 😦

PS: Have you watched “Cinema Paradiso”?

    • Holy mother Gaia! You’ve just brought up an memory. Yes, I’ve watched it once a long time ago. The father-and-son-like friendship between the boy and the projector operator. It was lovely. Sad, yet heartwarming.
