Looking at the current political situation in Indonesia, I can’t help noticing the plain fact that the most striking setback here is people’s lack of enthusiasm to be involved in the election. Truth be told, the last general election actually marked the victory of those who were abstain from voting. In the other words, the majority of voters in Indonesia chose to simply ignore their rights to vote.

Now, there is this manga series titled Sanctuary, written by Sho Fumimura and drawn by Ryoichi Ikegami. It’s a political thriller, a crime flick, a rare breed, a mature manga. By ‘mature’ here I’m referring to the manga’s depiction of adult characters making realistic choices when facing difficult situations, the characteristics and personalities in a familiar-looking world, with topics and themes in a realistic manner of adults with real motives. All characters  in this manga have their  real consistent personalities, and all have reasons for the things they do.

Anyway, the real political situation depicted in this story bears a striking similarity to Indonesia’s present political atmosphere. Many of Japanese voters simply ignore their rights to vote and to exercise their rights to affect the course of political movement. Of course the similarity is not like the similarity between twins; more like a kissing-cousin resemblance. The manga argues that the Japanese citizens have been enjoying a too long era of prosperity and stability that they don’t even think it’s necessary to make any change. If we see how it is in Indonesia, it’s slightly different. The majority of the people of Indonesia have suffered the impact of a long economical and monetary crisis, with little or no progress at all made by the changing governments, and so they choose to ignore their right to vote simply because they don’t believe in any candidate to be able to make any difference.

Different cause, same result.

Anyway, this manga also offers a plausible way to solve that problem. That is why I highly recommend this one. Every Indonesian politician should read this (if they are able to read at all, which I doubt).

Sanctuary is truly an exceptional manga, a true renegade of the mainstream manga. If you want to find a manga with exceptionally enchanting story and rare quality of the art, this Sanctuary is for you. Every chapter ends with you craving for more.

Go get it, read it, and spread the word.

  2. bener.. salah satu dongo nya negara ini ya karena tingginya absent… masalahnya election indon siapa sih yg bisa dipilih bener2 mewakili rakyat. gak ada.. mending ancur aja lah sekalian negaranya…

    • True enough. All the available candidates simply represent their political parties or other joint interests. As long as a candidate – either for legislative body or for presidency – still has to be affiliated with a political party, there will never be a healthy political atmosphere.

  3. I looked around who would be able to take shelter under the umbrella of the real political and grabbed my hand in comfort away from the Indonesia-terrorists, free sex, abuse — but a lot of heads is equal to the number will
