It’s Happening Right Now

How do you love the internet? Think of all those awesome things it has offered us since the beginning of its creation. And now, the internet is in another serious danger. Not for the first time, and definitely not for the last time.

First thing first, watch this video:

A government-controlled UN agency called the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is now organizing the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT). If some proposals at WCIT are approved, decisions about the internet would be made by a top-down, old-school government-centric agency behind closed doors. Some proposals allow for access to be cut off more easily, threaten privacy, legitimize monitoring and blocking online traffic. Others seek to impose new fees for accessing content, not to mention slowing down connection speeds. If the delicate balance of the internet is upset, it could have grave consequences for businesses and human rights.

After much pressure the ITU has just decided to open up some of the process to the public at the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT), being held in Dubai until Dec. 14. Congratulations – this is a breakthrough.
Our pressure is working, but now we come to a pivotal moment. That’s why we need your help.
With proposals being taken up that could make the internet less open, more costly, and much slower, Access is on the ground in Dubai to represent the digital rights for users around the world. If these dangerous proposals go through, the interests of billions of global internet users would be trumped by governments and large telecoms.
The next ten days are critical to the future of the internet. Here are some ways you can pitch in:
We can win this, but we’re going to need you over the next ten days. So keep an eye out for alerts and actions to protect your internet. Together, our voices will prove to be an invaluable tool. We’re going to use the internet to protect it.
Remember, only governments get a vote at WCIT, so we need people from all around the world to demand that our leaders keep the internet open.
So, you love the internet? Watch the video, and take action above to tell your governments to oppose handing over key decisions about the internet to the ITU. Go HERE and let’s use the internet’s global reach to save it.
